Decoding a Tire Number Meaning

The code on a tire is made up of a series of numbers and letters that help to inform you of the size, speed rating, load index, and type of tire your vehicle needs. Take this code below, for example:

P215/65R15 95H

Obviously, it may seem like a bunch of random letters and numbers if you don’t understand the meaning, but let’s break down what each of these codes is saying.

First, the “P” at the beginning stands for “P-Metric tire,” meaning that it is used for passenger vehicles. Tires that begin with “LT” are for light-weight pickup trucks, with the “LT” standing for “light truck.” For tires that don’t start with any letter before the code, these are European-style tires, also known as Euro-Metric tires, which have different load capacities.

After the “P” in our code, we have the number “215”, which designated the tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall.

Following this number is the aspect ratio code, which is “65” in this scenario. A tire’s ratio code tells you the height of the tire’s cross-section to its width. So, with the example above of “65,” the tire has an aspect ratio where its height is equal to 65% of its width. Tires with larger aspect ratio numbers have larger sidewalls.

Next up, we have the “R” in the code, which indicates the tire’s construction. The “R” here denotes that the tire is radial. After that, we have the number “15,” which indicates the wheel’s size from one end to the other. This is important so that you get the right sized tire for your vehicle’s wheel.

Finally, at the end of our example code we have “95H,” which denotes the load index and speed rating for a tire. The “95” is the load index, which indicates how much weight the tire is able to suppoer when properly inflated. Typically, for passenger vehicles, this number ranges between 75 and 105. The “H” here represents the tire’s speed rating, which tells you just how fast the tire can safely go based on its load capacity. This rating is ranked from A-Z, and tires with an “H” rating can hit a maximum speed of up to 130 mph.
