How to Check the Oil Level in a Car

If you want to save money on auto repairs, the first thing you should do is learn how to check the oil level. In a car, SUV, or truck, the process is relatively simple! Some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that alert you when you’re due for an oil change. Many vehicles still require a manual oil check with the traditional oil dipstick. Here’s how to check the oil level in a car manually:

  1. Park your car on level ground and turn off the engine.
  2. Ensure that the engine has had at least 30 minutes to cool down.
  3. Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick.
  4. Pull the dipstick out of the oil reservoir, and wipe any oil from the end.
  5. Re-insert the dipstick, taking care to push it all the way back into its tube.
  6. Carefully pull it back out, and inspect the oil level on both sides.

There should be marking on the dipstick indicating the proper oil level. If your oil reaches within that area, your oil level is good. If it’s low, unscrew the oil reservoir cap and add oil gradually, stopping often to re-check the level.

Why Should You Learn How to Check Car Oil?

Not only does oil keep your engine properly lubricated, but it actively prevents overheating. Experts recommend checking your oil at home once per month and oil change service once or twice yearly. Keep in mind that your vehicle may need more or less frequent oil changes, especially if conditions are extra dusty where you drive in Cedar Park.
