How to Lift a Truck

Whether you want to lift your truck purely for the look of it, for greater off-roading clearance, or for better visibility on Austin roads, we at Nyle Maxwell Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram certainly understand the appeal of a lift. While lift kits can get and new tires can be pricey, we also understand why you may want to lift your truck yourself. Lift Your Truck: A Step-by-Step

It comes highly recommended that you work from a formal lift kit, and refer to it’s specific instructions and manual as you perform the lift. There is no substitute for the lift kit’s official guide. In the steps below, we’ll give an outline as to what phases of the truck-lifting process you can most likely expect to find in your manual.

  1. Remove the negative battery cable from its terminal.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on your tires so you can remove them with more ease after jacking up your truck.
  3. With your jack, raise the truck while carefully minding its center of gravity.
  4. Remove the tires and wheels and set them aside.
  5. Remove the U-bolts, shocks, and springs.
  6. Attach the new bolts, shocks, and suspension according strictly to the instructions that came with your lift kit.
  7. With a torque wrench, make sure all bolts and other elements are tightened to the specific standards.
  8. Reattach your old tires, or your new, larger tires you have now created the space for.
  9. Lower your vehicle carefully, keeping it level as it moves back down to the ground.

Now that you have a general overview of the process, you are better equipped to decide if a DIY lift is right for you. Note that altering your vehicle’s suspension will result in decreased control and handling, decreased fuel efficiency, and a new center of gravity. An at-home lift should be done correctly and with plenty of patience, the right tools, and by closely following the lift kit instruction manual. If you are at all hesitant to conduct the lift yourself, contact a professional.
